Eating Healthy on a Budget
I found a good article on how to eat healthy and not break the bank. It can be found here: Tips for a Healthy Diet on a Budget
I've been blessed with not having to worry too much about having enough money to eat the way I do. Make no doubt about it, it is definitely more expensive than eating junk food all the time. Well, kind of... when I was eating junk food, the sheer quantities I consumed made up for any savings.
Someone at a meeting yesterday shared that she and her husband are fighting over the costs of her foods. I feel for her - because it's so important to be able to take care of ourselves and so many of us don't take care of ourselves as a rule - we don't need any more excuses than we already have.
One of the things I have done to save money is to find a local farmers market that sells produce and dairy items at a much lower price than the grocery store. In addition to being cheaper, the food is also fresher! This market is a bit farther away than the grocery store, but the savings are worth it.
I also have utilized my dad's retired military status and gone to the commissary to buy groceries, especially meats, with my mom. For the times when that's not possible, I belong to a wholesale club to buy my meats and frozen goods in bulk for cheaper prices.
And sales - I buy in bulk when items I frequently eat are on sale.
Just like anything else - when there's a will, there's a way. If you truly want to eat healthy, I don't believe the family budget should make or break that decision for you.
